150 years of American craftsmanship arrives in Georgetown today, with the opening of
The Frye Company's latest flagship store at 1066 Wisconsin Avenue, NW.
The freshly remodeled, 2,700-squarefoot retail location assumes stewardship of Vigilant Firehouse, the oldest surviving firehouse in the District, and is the footwear company's third in the United States (behind New York and Boston).
Frye boots were originally created by
John A. Frye for factory workers in Marlboro, Massachusetts. Over the years, the brand has transcended the sartorial barriers of practicality/durability to become a full-fledged fashion house, with its products now popping-up inside the closets of craftsmen and celebrity starlets alike.
Such trendsetting status is deserved, however, with
General George S. Patton donning a pair of Frye boots during World War II and the company's signature CAMPUS boot even occupying a place in the Smithsonian's permanent collection as a historically fashionable embodiment of the attitude and styles of the turbulent '60s and '70s.
By comparison, Washington street style should be a breeze to accessorize. All the better when made in America.
The Frye Company's Georgetown store will be open Monday-Saturday, 11:00am to 8:00pm and Sunday from 12:00pm to 6:00pm.
