NORTHWEST -- In a city known for billion dollar bailouts, both foreign and domestic, it’s easy to lose sight of the people at the end of any given relief effort. However, when it’s discovered that fellow Washingtonians are experiencing real suffering due to a lack of access to the basic elements required to survive – food, shelter, health care – the need for community-based assistance programs is revealed to be equally all too real.
Enter D.C.-based non-profit organizations, such as
So Others Might Eat (SOME), specifically directed at helping individuals in their own backyard (e.g., our nation’s capital). Founded in 1970 with the simple goal of helping feed Washington’s destitute citizens, SOME’s assistance programs have since grown to include affordable housing, job training, substance abuse, and healthcare initiatives.
And on Friday night, the young professionals offshoot of the multimillion dollar charity held its eighth annual formal celebration benefiting its parent organization, inside the statuesque entrance hall to the
Corcoran Gallery of Art.
Titled simply the SOMEjr Gala, the sold-out party invited hundreds of twenty-somethings out for an elegant evening of tasty hors d’oeuvres, a half-dozen open bars, and a massive dance floor where they were free to spend the evening grooving to a refreshing mix of soul, Motown, and classic rock covers, as performed by the
The Blue Tips Rhythm Revue.
Proceeds from the night, which included a well-stocked raffle table, will be used to build a playground at
Marguerite's Place -- a community center being developed by SOME for the families living in apartments at two of its long-term affordable housing locations.
The numbers speak for themselves: 262,000+ hot meals served, ~19,000 showers provided, ~11,000 health care visits rendered – all in 2010 alone.
SOME fun, indeed!
