NORTHWEST -- The red carpet was unfurled, the champagne chilled, the jewels polished, the limos rented, and the tuxedos and gowns donned on Sunday night, for the fourth annual Oscar Night America celebration benefiting the
American Red Cross in the National Capital Region.
Held inside the regal Great Hall and Mezzanine areas of the
National Museum of Women in the Arts, the black tie affair served as the District’s only official Academy-sanctioned viewing party of the
83rd Annual Academy Awards.
Gone were last year’s technical problems that were the source of much frustration among ticketholders. Guests to Sunday evening’s party were treated to a massive projected telecast of the awards ceremony in the center of the Great Hall, with individual widescreen plasma televisions scattered throughout all floors for good measure.
Well-stocked bars and buffets of savory bites lined the periphery of both general admission and VIP areas, although the cupcake table, courtesy of the
Sweet Tooth bakery, was easily the most popular spot of the night.
ABC 7 weekend anchor
Pamela Brown, also the night’s honorary emcee, mingled with guests throughout the broadcast, offering movie recommendations and the occasional playful starlet style commentary.
Between commercial breaks, attendees were invited to participate in an on-going series of raffles that offered-up prizes as diverse as gourmet dinners, orchestra tickets to the
Kennedy Center or even luxurious spa treatments, with all proceeds benefiting the American Red Cross.
Christian Bale and
Melissa Leo might have clinched the awards for “Best Supporting…” actor and actress, respectively, but we think the Red Cross deserves a matching award for “Best Supporting Organization”!
