NORTHWEST -- Before she charmed audiences with starring television roles on
Ally McBeal,
The Sopranos, and, most recently,
Friday Night Lights or wowed moviegoers on the big screen opposite stars like
Hugh Grant,
Sandra Bullock, and
Kevin Costner,
Alicia Witt was a struggling actress in Hollywood who supported herself by playing the piano at the
Regent Beverly Wilshire.
And with a successful television, movie, and theater career now under her belt, it can be said that Witt’s professional ambitions are coming full circle, thanks to her renewed interest in recent years in singing and songwriting.
Building on the continued momentum from her self-titled EP release in 2009, Witt has embarked on an under-the-radar national tour of sorts, targeted at intimate, upscale venues throughout the country.
Thursday evening witnessed the Washington stop of this limited series of performances, as Witt took over the luxurious lounge area of the
W Washington, D.C. hotel’s much-touted
P.O.V rooftop space for a special live acoustic performance.
Over the course of a well-received hour-long set that intermixed original material with a handful of easily recognizable covers, Witt proceeded to handily entertain fans and friends. Between songs, the actress-turned-singer/songwriter would joke or comment on the inspiration behind an upcoming piece, much to the delight of audience members.
Forget about Friday Night Lights, Thursday night is apparently what’s really (W) happening!
