CHINATOWN -- Despite the fact that the District’s NBA team is all but finished for the season,
Washington Wizards fans lucky enough to score a prime spot as a guest judge were nevertheless treated to a heated competition on Saturday, as the
Wizard Girls held the squad’s 2012 auditions on the floor of the Verizon Center.
More than a hundred girls began their weekend with an early morning wakeup call in order to vie for one of the twenty-or-so coveted spots as a Wizard Girl, for the upcoming basketball season. Auditions began with an open call for anyone looking to compete.

Judges for the occasion included a bevy of familiar D.C. names, include Wizards forward
Trevor Booker, Washington Redskins running back
Tristan Davis, Fox 5 sports reporter
Dave Ross, and WPGC 95.5 radio host
Sunni And The City.
After an initial series of cuts, the remaining candidates were then joined by a couple dozen new girls who had attended all 6 of the squad’s prep classes and therefore received a bye for the first round. That’s when things started to get really interesting.
Over the next hour, the remaining candidates were taught a quick hip hop dance routine that they perfected as a group, but were then forced to perform in small sets of three. All the while, judges were carefully assessing their appearance, attitude, and coordination, in addition to their dance skills.
At the end of the day, only 33 girls were selected to continue on to the Wizard Girls boot camp over the summer, where that number will be further whittled down to a final 20 girl roster. Fans too can get in on the judging action by voting online for their favorite candidates beginning this Friday, after they are introduced at the team’s draft party on Thursday night.
