GLOVER PARK -- With playful names like “Here to be Scene”, “Charity Chicks”, and “Balls and Dolls”, spectators at Glover Park’s Guy Mason Field on Saturday afternoon might have easily thought themselves at a high school intramural competition.
But the more than three thousand dollars raised for charity by the kickball tournament clearly indicated that the girls from
The Madison, whose members organized the event, were anything but kidding around.
Originally conceived back in August 2011 as a fundraiser disguised as a softball game, but delayed due to Hurricane Irene, Saturday’s competition saw 7 co-ed teams take the field in support of the professional, civic, and social women’s organization.
As with all of their 2012 events, including March’s
Saint Patrick’s Day benefit and next month’s club-oriented ‘MadiSCENE’ night, proceeds from this weekend’s game benefited
No Greater Sacrifice -- a non-profit dedicated to the children of fallen and wounded members of the U.S. Armed Services.
In exchange for each voluntary $10 donation, participants to the kickball game and their supporters were granted discounted food and drink specials at nearby businesses, including
Town Hall and
Mason Inn.
Spirits and energy during the day were kept high thanks to donations from sponsors
vitaminwater and
popchips!. All of the players were also generously gifted a gratis ticket to next week's
AT&T National golf tournament.
While everyone left the competition winners given the amount of money raised (Teams EverFi and Charity Chicks deserve particular recognition for their fundraising prowess), it was Team “Meet You At Home” with their army green fatigue-like uniforms that ultimately took home this year’s kickball trophy.
Madison President and winning team captain
Josie Taylor remarked: "This was the first time the organization has hosted a charitable Kickball Tournament, and we kicked it out of the park! With the weather on our side this time and the amazing support of Madison ladies, friends and the community, it was a very successful day; one that will be repeated next year!"
