Cool Cocktails Now On Summer Menu At Avenue Suites' A BAR

WEST END -- With D.C. firmly caught in the grip of the dog days of summer, area residents are always finding themselves searching for a welcome respite from the heat. And while a handful of restaurants in the Georgetown neighborhood might offer outdoor dining options, very few have the commensurate cocktail program to entice patrons to linger amidst the warmer evening weather.

Tucked away in the tranquil ground level shadow of the recently renovated Avenue Suites hotel, stylishly appointed A BAR fortunately doesn’t suffer from such concerns, however.

Masterfully guided by its trilingual bar manager, Sophie Penichet, and beverage manager Brennan Adams, who opened popular 14th Street hotspots Masa 14 and El Centro D.F., the brand new venue is designed as a tranquil oasis far removed from Pennsylvania Avenue’s normal hustle and bustle.

Whether guests choose to relax on the black leather settees that line the center of the lounge’s interior or chat outside by the fire pits tastefully arranged on the outdoor terrace, which itself is lined by a one hundred foot-long bright green garden wall, A BAR is a welcome addition to Washington.

But any bar, let alone A Bar, is only as good as the drinks greasing the wheels of its guests’ conversations. Fortunately, the West End’s latest addition so too shines in this respect. Indeed, since it first opened at the beginning of summer, Adams has been delighting cocktail connoisseurs with signature favorites, like the Midnight in Paris (Sparkling Brut, St. Germain, Lime Juice, Chili Grenadine Syrup) and The Clooney (Old Forester Bourbon, Original Sin Pippin Cherry Tree Cider, Carpano Antica, Orange Bitters).

But not one to rest on its laurels, A BAR continues to raise the bar (pun intended) in August, with the arrival of a brand new liquid nitrogen system and an updated drinks menu. Joining their spirited counterparts at the bar now is a new series of creatively chilled concoctions, with the most inventive of the new frozen drinks easily being the Drinkin’ Dots. Served in two separate shot glasses and designed to be consumed with a spoon, this summer menu staple is made-up of orange creamsicle and acai pomegranate dipping dots.

No less refreshing, although perhaps not as playful to share, are the frozen orange sorbet-inspired Patio Punch, the artfully decorated frozen Strawberry Basil Mojito, and the smoky Coffee & Cigarettes Scotch cocktail (the only time you’ll ever see a cigarette allowed inside A BAR), among others.
