PENN QUARTER -- With a beat that stretches far beyond 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the photographers of the
White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA) capture headline-making moments across the world.
And more than 70 of those images, along with video and new media, are now on display at the
Newseum in a new photography exhibit that opened today called
The Eyes of History 2012, which will run through March 29th, 2013.
Spotlighting the people and events that helped shape the world in 2011, including award-winning photographs from The AP’s
Charles Dharapak and
The Washington Times’
Andrew Harnik, the exhibit draws from the WHNPA’s annual photojournalism competition. More than 250 photographers competed for awards in 50 categories in this year’s contest.
The Eyes of History also traces the origin of the WHNPA, which was founded in 1921 when photographers were stilled barred from the U.S. Capitol (along with dogs). For 91 years, association members have covered the President, Congress, and major news events both in Washington and throughout the globe.
