NORTHWEST -- Building on
President Obama's leadership in creating a National Day of Service at the onset of each inaugural weekend,
The Artists and Athletes Alliance hosted a private reception on Sunday in honor of the grassroots volunteerism advocacy organization known as
ServiceNation.
Over a hundred guests streamed into the gilded walls of K Street power spot
DC Coast for the early evening gathering, which was headlined by
Vice President Joe Biden's sons,
Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden and
Hunter Biden.
Also speaking at the event was
Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who drew from her experience as one of the first female combat veterans in Congress in delivering her remarks, and was joined on stage by two service members, as well as a representative from the
Got Your 6 campaign.
This naturally being a reception hosted by The Artists & Athletes Alliance, which assists artists and athletes in navigating the halls of government, there was also plenty of star power in attendance.
From the athlete side of the aisle, well known NFL players
Fred Smoot,
Chester Pitts, and
Derrick Dockery could be found milling about (and occasionally glancing up at the TVs broadcasting the then live Ravens/Patriots game), with
CSI: Miami TV star
Omar Benson Miller adding a little Hollywood glamour to the evening.
With a mission to provide top-line educational information to artists and athletes on the specific public policies and issues of interest to them, The Artists & Athletes Alliance operates at the nexus between the entertainment community and Washington, D.C.
A valuable service indeed, with a larger purpose, in service to the nation.
