GEORGETOWN -- March Madness might have been in full swing over the weekend, but the competition that drew the most amount of heat in Georgetown was the charitable 2013 Chili Cook-Off underway on Saturday afternoon.
Hosted in popular Prospect Street restaurant and tavern
George, this year's tournament saw some 16 or so teams faceoff for the coveted title of chili champion.
It was a hearty battle to be sure, which pitted beans against beef and chicken against "the other white meat". While some participants let their kettles and crock pots do the talking for them, still others used the occasion to don festive costumes in the hopes of increasing their chances at gastronomic victory.
The chili champions.
And apparently such trickery worked, with
Kaitlyn Reilly and
Lauren Spivey's "Desperate Chili Cookers of Prospect Street" team taking the top title for the afternoon. The dynamic duo handily used Spivey's birthday the following day to court the sympathy vote with great success.
Such spicy sportsmanship though was all in good charitable fun, however, as the $~2,000 in proceeds from the event had been earmarked to the
Operation Incubation nonprofit.
Founded in April 2010 by
Julie Eckert and
Jeff Kurtzman, the 501(c)3 organization provides life-saving infant incubators and neonatal equipment to hospitals and communities in need in the developing world.
That's a bracket worth betting on.
