WASHINGTON, D.C. -- There was a variety of cocktails from which to choose courtesy of Ripple, but the cause was unabashedly singular yesterday evening, during a private fundraiser organized for
Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington (PPMW).
Beyond the chance to support the local nonprofit, the some 200 guests who turned out to the home of
SKDKnickerbocker Managing Director
Emily Lenzner were afforded the opportunity to talk one-on-one with the night's speakers, social justice advocate
Sandra Fluke and
Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (D-CT).
Fluke, of course, is perhaps best known for being denied the chance to testify in front of Congressional Republicans last year on the importance of contraceptive coverage under private insurance plans, as well as being a lightning rod for conservative criticism.
And Representative Esty made accessible and affordable health care for women a key part of her 2012 campaign for Congress.
They were joined by event co-chair
Dorothy Stein (along with Lenzner) and PPMW President
Dr. Laura Meyers, in addressing the assembled crowd of enthusiastic supporters.
Helping remind everyone of the organization's real world ties to the D.C. community, youth health messenger
Rarzeke Austin also spoke candidly about PPMW's Teen Clinic and its role in helping prevent teen pregnancy, while simultaneously promoting healthy relationships and lifestyles.
Austin's remarks were rendered all the more poignant by the fact that the month of May is National Teen Pregnancy Prevention month.
