NORTHWEST -- Well timed to coincide with the tail end of the District's 2013
Capital Pride street festival, syndicated columnist and TV personality
Dan Savage hosted a well attended book signing party late Sunday afternoon, on the rooftop of the
W Washington, D.C.
Held inside of the hotel's so-called 'Altitude' ballroom, the private event brought out many of the festival's attendees, with Savage seemingly taking the time to chat, hug, and pose for photos with each one of the hundreds of fans who showed-up.
Perhaps best known for his somewhat candid approach to discussing sex, love, and relationships in his syndicated "Savage Love" newspaper column, the Seattle resident became a virtual cultural icon -- particularly among the gay community (
Time Out New York labeled him "a gay superhero") -- for his Emmy-winning "It Gets Better" campaign to reach out to bullied teenagers.
His most recent published book, titled
American Savage: Insights, Slights, and Fights on Faith, Sex, Love, and Politics was released last month and strings together a series of essays that tackles everything from bedroom habits to fatherhood to religion to politics.
And Savage wasted no time in addressing such hot button issues, during a brief series of remarks he made during yesterday's event. Indeed, playful jabs that he made at perceived sanctimonious behavior on behalf of Republicans were met with cheers from the audience.
Of course, attendees were equally enthusiastic about the event's
Grey Goose and
St-Germain specialty cocktails.
They might be Savages after all, but civilized ones to be sure.
