First Lady Michelle Obama looks on as Washington Kastles player Anastasia Rodionova warms-up during yesterday's season opener.
SOUTHWEST -- With the day's ominous rain clouds making way for a near perfect summer evening, it could be said that there was something special in the air at yesterday's season opening match for the
Washington Kastles.
Indeed, a confluence of events contributed to the magic behind the team's 23-15 win last night over the
New York Sportimes, including the notable presence of
First Lady Michelle Obama, who was spotted happily cheering her (current) hometown team on from the VIP Owner's Club box at
Kastles Stadium at The Wharf.
With its 33rd straight win, the Kastles sit on the cusp of achieving an unprecedented milestone having now tied the 1971-1972 Los Angeles Lakers for the longest winning streak in U.S. professional sports history.
Monday's match began with a press conference inside the team's VIP tent area, with Kastles owner
Mark Ein, Coach
Murphy Jensen, and team players taking questions from a pool of international reporters.
Beyond the historic winning streak, perhaps the biggest news coming into yesterday's match was surrounding the recent addition of Mylan World TeamTennis Female MVP
Martina Hingis to the Kastles roster after
Venus Williams was forced with withdraw due to a back injury.
But that didn't stop Williams from standing side-by-side in solidarity with her former teammates yesterday, as they were all recognized for their 2012 championship triumph during a special ceremony held on the court just prior to the start of play.
Joining FLOTUS, Ein, and Williams in cheering the Kastles on last night was a healthy cadre of familiar Washington faces, including Washington Redskins Hall-of-Famer
John Riggins, Obama administration advisor
Valerie Jarrett, D.C.
Mayor Vincent Gray, CNN anchor
Wolf Blitzer, and
Dr. Sharon Malone, wife of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
The Kastles will now play for sole possession of the longest winning streak in U.S. pro sports history, when they host the Boston Lobsters tonight at their home on the Southwest waterfront.
It's probably therefore safe to say that many a Washingtonian is now warming a bowl of butter in preparation for a satisfying lobster boil. Refuse to lose!
