U STREET CORRIDOR -- Washingtonians were able to sip and sample a variety of the world's finest rums last week, as National Rum Day (August 16th) was feted throughout the District. However, far from being confined to a single day as its title would imply, this year's celebration was extended to include nearly a week-long series of events.
The scope of last week's festivities was unprecedented as, in prior years, the party mainly consisted of a special 'rum runner party bus' that took passengers on a multi-destination, bar crawl-style tour of some of D.C.'s best watering holes.
For 2013, however, the party bus on Friday night was but one part of the general merriment, with
Rum Day DC organizing a variety of additional events throughout the week, including a cocktail class on Wednesday and pool party on Sunday.
Perhaps the most popular gathering was an inaugural BBQ on Saturday afternoon that seemingly took over all parts of popular 14th Street speakeasy
The Gibson.
Dubbed a 'rum-b-que', the boozy bash boasted an all-you-can-eat barbecue buffet courtesy of "Hell’s Kitchen"’s season three winner chef
Rahman “Rock” Harper. Such grilled deliciousness was complemented by six bottomless premium rum stations, which afforded ticketholders the chance to sample a variety of different rums and thereby develop a newfound appreciation for the diversity of the spirit courtesy of sponsors Bacardi, Mount Gay Rum, Chairman’s Reserve, and Atlantico Rum.
Rum-inspired treats from Georgetown-based
Pie Sisters and the
Popcorn Queens only further sweetened the pot, with no guest leaving hungry.
