NORTHWEST -- Celebrity Cruises might have inspired the menu being catered by
Design Cuisine at the Smith Center Tuesday evening, but it was actual celebrities spotted rooting for the
Washington Kastles as they faced off against the Springfield Lasers.
From
First Lady Michelle Obama to AOL founders
Steve Case and
Jim Kimsey to members of the
Lerner Family (owners of the Washington Nationals), it was truly a see-and-be-seen night for the District's principle tennis franchise.
The people watching only took a backseat to the furious game play on the court itself, as some 3,300 fans packed the sold-out arena for the Kastles' final match of the regular
Mylan World TeamTennis season.
Sloane Stephens received a hero's welcome, along with the rest of the Kastles roster, as the team delivered a solid 23-15 win over the
Springfield Lasers.
Yesterday's victory ensures that the Kastles will have the home court advantage on
Thursday, when they take on the
Philadelphia Freedoms during the Eastern Conference Championship match.
2014 has been a banner year for the Kastles, with the franchise relocating to the Smith Center in Foggy Bottom from their former home down on the Southwest Waterfront.
The new digs have allowed the team to keep up with exploding demand for tickets, while simultaneously allowing for an enhanced array of VIP options, including the famed 'Baseline Experience' which places fans only 5-feet from the action.
Kastles owner
Mark Ein made the move possible by securing support from a variety of trusted partners, such as
Bloomberg,
Mercedes-Benz, and
FedEx, among others. Even the chilled
VOSS Water and
Tasty6 juices that lined the First Family's tables came from sponsors.
Such support, both from fans and sponsors alike, will be crucial in the coming weeks, as the Kastles strive for a fourth fourth straight Mylan WTT title. Refuse to lose!
