PENN QUARTER -- While the national media sometimes likes to poke fun of the nation's capitol by labeling D.C. as "Hollywood for ugly people", all it takes is a quick glance at the city's flourishing
nightlife scene to separate fact from fiction.
And Tuesday evening, it was
The Hill's turn to pay tribute to some of Washington's most fetching, as the self-described "publication of record for policy influencers" feted its 11th annual "50 Most Beautiful" list.
A playful feature that is unveiled with much fanfare to the wonkiest of the District's workforce each year, the "Most Beautiful" list provides readers of the paper with a fun escape from the normally legislation and politics-heavy content.
For 2014, roughly 400 nominees were whittled down to the final 50 honorees, which consisted of 15 Republicans, 22 Democrats, and 13 other/undisclosed individuals.
Only members of Congress, Congressional staffers, campaign aides, lobbyists, Capitol Hill personnel, and executive branch employees are eligible. Nominations are solicited from everyone who works at similarly affiliated jobs, but the final 50 is chosen exclusively by members of
The Hill staff.
Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and
Cory Booker (D-NJ) and
Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and
Markwayne Mullin are among the some half-dozen lawmakers featured on this year's list. Incoming White House Press Secretary
Josh Earnest also secured a prized spot.
Well known media types who also made the cut included Fox News Channel's
Bret Baier, CNN's
S.E. Cupp, CBS News'
Nancy Cordes, and NBC News'
Kristen Welker.
For the first time ever, the 'Most Beautiful' list for 2014 also included a special "Reader's Choice" pick, which was determined based on online votes collected on
Facebook and
thehill.com, and went to Minnesota native
Meredith Raimondi (a scheduler for
Rep. Betty McCollum).
D.C.'s finest (and their equally beautiful friends) even had the opportunity to celebrate in grand style this year, with
The Hill teaming-up with the
National Beer Wholesalers Association for a private party last night at Penn Quarter's
Poste Brasserie.
Guests were granted exclusive access to the restaurant's picturesque courtyard and atrium lounge for the occasion, in addition to a full dinner buffet and, of course, more than a dozen varietals of beer.
Cheers to the Beltway's beautiful people!
