SOUTHWEST -- The music of Dizzy Gillespie was alive and kicking on Wednesday night as the District feted the start of the 2010 DC Jazz Festival with an Opening Gala and Concert at the ultra-luxurious Mandarin Oriental Washington, D.C. down by the Tidal Basin.

The gala attracted hundreds of the city's most prominent jazz fans, including festival chair and Publisher of The Washington Post Katharine Weymouth, ABC7/WJLA-TV news anchor Maureen Bunyan, former D.C. mayor Marion Barry, Blonde Charity Mafia's Katherine Kennedy, Blondes vs Brunettes' Keri Ann Meslar, American College of Cardiology's (and Fashion for Paws Executive Committee member) Carissa Maguire, and CytoSport's Lauren Pomponio.

While area residents might be familiar with the Mandarin Oriental's popular jazz nights throughout the year, guests to last night's party were treated to a special performance as a veritable who's who among jazz musicians came together for an amazing set list:

Roy Hargrove on trumpet. Tony Madruga and Cyrus Chestnut on piano. Roberta Gambarini on vocals. And with the rest of The Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars (of which Madruga and Chestnut are members) contributing their own unique playing styles to each song, the audience was constantly tapping its feet (or applauding).
