NORTHEAST -- Guests to the after party for
The Phillips Collection's 2015 annual gala were treated to a cultural journey of sorts, when they found themselves transported from a balcony overlooking the Seine (a la Renoir's
Luncheon of the Boating Party) to Japan's vibrant, pulsating underground.
Titled 'A Tokyo Night', the late night celebration (guests could also purchase tickets separately just to the Union Market bash) was organized by members of the museum's 'Contemporaries' program, which is designed to connect the District's young professionals to the historic works of art on display at The Phillips Collection.
The party was inspired by the Harajuku and Shimokitazawa districts of Tokyo, with those neighborhoods perhaps best known for their cutting-edge fashion, vibrant pop art scene, and spectacular nightlife.
In the same vein, guests to 'A Tokyo Night' enjoyed a creative fashion lounge, complete with a two-way photo booth, a live Taiko drumming performance, a bevy of Japanese-inspired cocktails and bites, and even a private arcade stocked with gaming stations featuring such classics as Super Smash Bros, Street Fighter, Minecraft, and Mario Kart.
The Contemporaries bash, like the more formal annual gala, raise critical resources for the museum's award-winning education programs. Beyond the venerable walls of its art gallery, The Phillips Collection also strives to push the boundaries of K–12 education, with the development of its own teaching framework to support teachers of any subject as they develop arts-integrated lessons and curricula.
Banzai Phillips Collection!
