Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr., House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, CNN Anchor Dana Bash, and Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Spacey.
NORTHWEST -- Monday evening was all about the 'House' that
Kevin Spacey and
Cal Ripken, Jr. built, with the Emmy Award-winning
House of Cards actor and baseball legend teaming-up for a red carpet benefit at Arena Stage.
Dubbed 'Under the Lights', the glamorous gala saw the two stars sit down with veteran CNN anchor
Dana Bash for an evening of storytelling that focused on their respective careers, how they achieved success, and, perhaps most importantly, the importance of giving back.
Guests were allowed to ask questions of the stars at the end of the formal program, before everyone adjourned to the upper floor and terrace for some charitable cocktails and carousing. Among the notables spotted in the crowd was
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (the rumored next Speaker of the House),
Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, MTV actor and comedian
Chris Distefano, and a smattering of D.C. United soccer players.
Monday's event raised nearly $250,000 from the live auction component of the night alone for the
Kevin Spacey Foundation and
Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, with the former championing new talent and educating and inspiring young people through the creative arts and the latter focused on teaching critical life lessons to disadvantaged youth.
Frank Underwood (Spacey's nefarious character on
House of Cards) would probably have been beside himself, with the kindheartedness of it all.
