NORTHWEST -- Stephanie Williams, a 23-year-old student at the George Washington University Medical School, won the 2010 Miss District of Columbia title Sunday night after belting out a Broadway tune, modeling both swimwear and eveningwear, and explaining to the audience how D.C. should combat the image of being "Hollywood for ugly people."
The pageant started with an opening dance routine performed by all 18 finalists set to the theme song of the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever as originally recorded by Shirley Bassey in 1971:
After the always popular swimsuit segment of the competition, the contestants were interviewed on-stage by Kate Michael, founder of the K Street Kate online lifestyle magazine as well as a former Miss District of Columbia (2006) herself:
The young women competing that night then each individually performed a "talent" routine for the audience. A mastery of a variety of musical instruments (piano, violin) as well as various forms of dance (jazz, contemporary) and song (Broadway, Big Band, Jazz, Pop, Gospel) were all on display Sunday night:
The panel of judges for this year's pageant included:
Gina Adams - Vice President Government Affairs, FedEx Corporation
Lisa Gable - Executive Director, Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation
Kristi Glakas - Miss Virginia 2005, Third Runner-up Miss America
Bob Pence - President, Pence-Friedel Developers, Inc.
Tien Wong - Chairman & CEO, Opus 8, Inc.
Stephanie will go on to compete in the 90th Miss America pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 15, 2011. The District will be rooting for her!
