SOUTHEAST -- More than 700 guests descended upon Nationals Park on Monday night to celebrate the D.C. launch of Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman's ziMS Foundation with "A Night at the Park".
A non-profit that Ryan had started in 2006 after his first year in the big leagues, the ziMS Foundation is dedicated to the treatment and ultimate cure of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Approximately 400,000 Americans (2.5 million worldwide) are currently living with MS; a disease that targets the central nervous system of its host.
Ryan's mother, Cheryl Zimmerman, was first diagnosed with the disease in 1995 and the University of Virginia graduate credits her condition as a major influence on his development as both a person and ballplayer. Both of Ryan's parents now serve on the board of the ziMS Foundation and were in attendance at last night's benefit.
For the media, Monday's event began at 6:00 p.m. with a press conference inside Nationals Park. Ryan, his parents and brother, and Brodie Van Wagenen (his agent from Creative Artists Agency) were all on hand to briefly talk about the foundation and answer questions from reporters.
At approximately 7:00 p.m., the stadium's gates were opened to the general public and a silent auction commenced, featuring prizes from area sports teams and businesses, as well as a wide variety of entertainment packages from entertainers also represented by Creative Artists Agency.
The evening's entertainment program consisted of live music performances by Philadelphia recording artists Amos Lee (whom recently served as the opening act for select stops on the 2010 Dave Matthews Band summer tour) and Mutlu (a longtime collaborator of Amos).
VIP ticketholders were also treated to a private performance by world-renowned magician David Blaine (everything that he made vanish re-appeared, we promise).
A thrilling live auction was conducted prior to the start of the music performances, with "dates" with Ryan Zimmerman and David Blaine fetching more than $6,000 and $3,000, respectively.
The ballplayers (fellow Nats players Drew Storen, Adam Dunn, Craig Stammen, Ivan Rodriguez, Willie Harris, John Lannan, Sean Burnett, Ross Detwiler, and Tyler Clippard were also spotted last night), music artists, celebrities, and auctions were certainly the main attractions of the event to guests, but the true beneficiaries of the night at the ballpark were the National Capital Chapter of the National MS Society, to which Ryan presented a check (in his foundation's name) for $30,000 and the ziMS Foundation, which raised more than $200,000 in the fight against MS.
Sounds like a home run to us!
