(L-R) Cara Shafran, Lindley Thornburg, Katelynn Calonkey, and Melissa Walker are all blonde and beautiful. But will they make the cut for this year's Team Blonde? We think so!

NORTHWEST -- Blonde or Brunette? It's a question as old as time (well, 60 years at least)... And since 2005, Washingtonians have seen this epic rivalry spill over onto the football field in the form of an annual Powderpuff game aptly titled: Blondes vs. Brunettes.
The premise is simple. Twenty blondes and twenty brunettes take the field. Only one team emerges victorious, however, with bragging rights as the fairer of the two hair colors for the next year.
Outside of being a heck of a lot of fun for participants and observers alike, the best part about this competition is that it also helps raise money for the
National Capital Area Chapter of the
Alzheimer’s Association. A lot of money. More than $250,000 since 2005, to be precise.
How do they do it? While the details have varied over the years, for 2010, any D.C. resident who wishes to play in the big game must raise a minimum of $250 from supporters (although most raise thousands of dollars each). The top 10 fundraisers for each side then automatically win spots on the corresponding team.
For the remaining 10 slots on each team, contenders are judged not just on their fundraising prowess, but also on their athletic performance during practice sessions, spirit, etc. Of course, anyone who doesn't make the team is still welcomed into the fold as a "cheerleader." Indeed, the entire competition is incredibly social and a terrific way for newcomers to the city to meet new friends.
With the 2010 Blondes vs. Brunettes Draft Party scheduled for September 11th, contenders have kicked their fundraising efforts up a notch in recent days in the hopes of securing spots as players.
And last night, four D.C. hopefuls for Team Blonde --
Melissa Walker,
Katelynn Calonkey,
Lindley Thornburg, and
Cara Shafran -- threw a party inside the recently-opened VIP Suite of
Cafe Citron in support of their candidacies.
Fellow blondes
Keri Ann Meslar,
Josie Taylor, and
Judy Mayka were also rooting for the girls, as was D.C. power promoter
Jamie Hess and even the occasional brunette (traitor!).
A $10 suggested door donation bought guests access to a tasty drink menu. For the die-hard supporter, however,
tequila Ambhar had agreed to sweeten the pot by donating $1 from every shot or margarita featuring the brand. Naturally, all proceeds benefited the Alzheimer’s Association.
With over a hundred people expected to attend, it sounds like Team Blonde is off to a great start. But does Washington ultimately prefer blondes? Stay tuned D.C.!
