GEORGETOWN -- Dozens of the city's most popular clothing, accessories, and shoe boutiques teamed up on Thursday evening to clear out remaining end-of-season merchandise, during the fall installment of the ultra-popular
District Sample Sale series of events.
Modeled after the warehouse events that are commonly held in New York City throughout the year, the District Sample Sale was founded in 2006 by
Mary Schmidt Amons,
Shannon Haley,
Liberty Jones,
Barbara Martin, and
Jayne Sandman.
Billed as "the season's most fashionable charitable event," all profits from last night's event will be donated to the
GW Mammovan -- a self-contained mobile unit that travels to corporate and community sites, offering one-stop breast cancer screening to patients.
Yesterday, "VIP" and "Benefactress" guests started to descend upon Georgetown's Cady's Alley just after 5:00 p.m. Such premium ticketholders had paid for the privilege of gaining early access to the sale's best designer bargains (and sizes), in addition to receiving complimentary "paperless goodie bags."
Regular guests were subsequently granted access at 6:30 p.m. and that's when things started to get interesting!
While sipping cocktails and nibbling on savory bites and sinful sweets from the likes of Georgetown Cupcake, Cafe Bonaparte, Neyla, iCi Urban Bistro, Kababji, Morso, Ping Pong Dim Sum, and FunXion, hundreds of women (indeed, the sale isn't designed for male shoppers) thumbed through rack after rack of clothes, row upon row of shoes, and tables piled-high with accessories -- all in search of the perfect "find" in the perfect size at the perfect price.
DJ Neekola kept the crowd energized with an upbeat soundtrack, while shoppers who wanted to take a break from the busy sales floor were able to seek refuge in a comfortable "relaxation station" sponsored by
vitaminwater -- complete with complimentary massages, nail polish changes, and, of course, complimentary samples of vitaminwater.
one80salon had even setup a makeshift salon on the ground floor, with complimentary hair makeovers for guests.
To date, the District Sample Sale series has raised more than $187,000 for local women's (fall) and children's (spring) charities.
D.C. do-gooders never looked so good!
