GEORGETOWN -- The world's political powerbrokers and trendsetters descended upon D.C. Saturday night, for the 2011 edition of the annual Alfalfa Club dinner at the downtown
Capital Hilton hotel.
But when your 250 or so members include former Presidents, billionaires, A-list entertainers, and dozens of Senators and governors, where do you go for the after party? I mean, the world is literally this group's playground after all, right?
The answer to this question was quickly discovered yesterday evening, as dozens of Alfalfa Club members and their guests filled the glass and stone-lined walls of Georgetown's upscale
L2 Lounge just before the stroke of midnight.
L2 regular and
Venturehouse Group Founder
Mark Ein and
Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.) led the way with a handful of friends and family in tow -- all clad in black tie attire.
They were joined throughout the night by a parade of other Alfalfa Club members and D.C. notables, including
National Geographic Chairman & CEO
John Fahey,
Under Armour Founder
Kevin Plank,
Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group Co-Founder
Russ Ramsey,
94.7 Fresh FM radio host
Tommy McFLY, and
ABC 7 news anchor
Pamela Brown.
Twenty-two-time GRAMMY Award-winning
U2 drummer
Larry Mullen, Jr. even stopped by to say hello and share a drink or two!
Founded in 1913, the Alfalfa Club exists for the sole purpose of holding a single annual banquet on the last Saturday of January. The group's name is a playful reference to the alfalfa plant and the plant's supposed willingness
to do virtually anything for a drink.
Over the years, the elite group has counted Presidents (Nixon, Ford, Truman, Reagan, Bush I & II), business leaders (
Warren Buffet,
Michael Bloomberg,
Ross Perot,
Steve Forbes,
Nelson Rockefeller), and Supreme Court Justices as members.
Former Supreme Court Justice
Sandra Day O'Connor was, in fact, elected Saturday night as the 2011 Alfalfa Club President. Through such an achievement, Justice O'Connor now has the honor of being both the first female member of the Supreme Court and the first female member and president of the club.
Of course at L2 Lounge, privacy always trumps celebrity and Saturday night's crowd was as relaxed and cheerful as could be; content in the knowledge that they were surrounded by good people, good conversation, and good music (fresh off of the release of her debut album,
Playtime,
DJ Neekola was inside the DJ booth that evening).
The tasty drinks, mixed-up under the watchful eyes of L2 Lounge manager
Oscar A. Colque-Michel, probably didn't hurt either...
Pillars of politics, business, fashion, and music all under one roof. Sounds like a club worth joining to us!
